The Navigli district is built around a network of canals, the Naviglio Grande and the Naviglio Pavese, which once carried goods and building materials into the city. Today the canal banks are lined with old houses, workshops converted into galleries and boutiques, and a dense run of bars and restaurants whose tables spill out along the water.

It is the city's best-known spot for an evening out, particularly for aperitivo and late-night drinks, and the atmosphere is lively and social. A leisurely walk along both canals takes around two hours, longer if you stop for a drink.
