Wander the Monumental Cemetery of Milan, where grief became grand sculpture. Spend about 75 minutes strolling shaded avenues, comparing tombs and monuments that look more like an open-air gallery than a cemetery.
Full description
The Monumental Cemetery works as an open-air sculpture museum as much as a burial ground. Its avenues are lined with tombs in widely differing styles, from realistic figures to towering monuments several metres high, some attributed to renowned artists and architects.
Mature shade trees give it a calm, park-like feel, and reviewers describe a morning walk here as unexpectedly absorbing rather than sombre. Admission is free and there is no booking, so it suits a flexible slot of around 75 minutes.
The site covers a lot of ground, which makes a gentle but steady walk.

Stunning! I've never seen a cemetery like this before. Feels like you are walking through an art museum. Every tomb is so different and artistic. Sculptures and large tens of meter high tombs. Was a beautiful experience to walk around and experience. Very humbling. An unexpected favourite whilst in Milan.
