Escape to Chiaravalle Abbey, a quiet 12th-century gem just beyond Milan's centre. Wander the simple, majestic interior, admire the bell tower and the unusual staircase, and soak up the calm of its rural setting.

📖

Full description

Founded in the 12th century by the followers of St Bernard of Clairvaux, Chiaravalle sits on the southern outskirts of Milan in a calm, semi-rural setting. The exterior is dominated by its tall bell tower, while the interior is described by visitors as both simple and majestic, with Romanesque structure and Gothic touches.

Reviewers single out the unusual staircase and the peaceful atmosphere, which feels far from the city centre. Entry is free, and a short visit of around 45 minutes is enough to take in the church, tower and surroundings.

It suits visitors who want a quieter, more contemplative stop beyond central Milan.

  • don't leave luggage or valuables in a parked car, as one reviewer reported a theft nearby
  • combine it with the adjacent cemetery area.

Reviews

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CAR We parked at the cemetery, visited it and the abbey for like half an hour and when we got back. Our suitcases and other things were gone. Apart from this unfortunate incident, both are really pretty!
