Step into the Palacio de Velázquez, a free neoclassical pavilion tucked inside Retiro Park. Browse the current contemporary art exhibition, admire the red-brick architecture and cool off indoors before returning to the park's paths.

📖

Full description

The Palacio de Velázquez is a restored neoclassical pavilion inside Retiro Park, built between 1881 and 1883 and now used for rotating contemporary art exhibitions. Reviewers single out the architecture, a blend of red brick and decorative detail, as much as the shows themselves, which are often timed exhibitions with a focus on paintings.

Entry is free, the interior is air-conditioned, and the compact size makes it a convenient break during a walk through the park in hot or cold weather. A visit takes around 45 minutes, and opening hours run through most of the day, even on Mondays, which is unusual among Madrid museums.

Reviews

Small museum with free entrance within the Park. Good AC inside, perfect stop after a walk outside if it's too hot/cold. There are some timed exhibitions, mostly interesting paintings. Nice building inside and outside as well.
