Plaza Mayor

Wander into Plaza Mayor, the arcaded square at the heart of old Madrid. Walk beneath the arches, take in the Philip III statue and linger at a terrace in one of the city's defining public spaces.

📖

Full description

Plaza Mayor is the old historic centre of Madrid, a large rectangular square originally laid out in 1617 under the Habsburgs and enclosed by uniform arcaded buildings. Cafes and restaurants line the arches, and a statue of Philip III stands in the middle.

Unlike the busier Puerta del Sol, visitors say it keeps its charm and a lively but welcoming atmosphere, good for walking, photos or a drink under the arcades. It is open at all hours and free to enter, so it suits both a quick pass-through and a longer stop around thirty minutes.
