Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales

4.4 ·

Discover the Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales, a working convent hidden in central Madrid. Follow a guided tour through chapels, tapestries, and a collection of sacred art.

📖

Full description

Founded in the 1500s, the Descalzas Reales is a royal monastery that still houses a community of Franciscan nuns while opening part of its building as a museum. Visits are by guided tour only, passing through chapels, tapestries, and sacred art that includes works attributed to Titian, Rubens, and Caravaggio.

Reviewers describe it as a hidden treasure set right in the middle of the city, and advise buying tickets in advance. Because tours are largely delivered in Spanish, non-speakers may want to prepare in advance.

Reviews

This beautiful convent/palace is chock full of works of art. You can only visit as part of a guided tour and as my Spanish is basic it would have been useful to have a QR code to scan to provide a bit more information in English.
