Metropolis Building

4.7 ·

Admire the Metropolis Building, the ornate landmark marking the start of Gran Vía. Study the golden dome and winged statue from the street, then continue along the avenue.

📖

Full description

Completed in 1911, the Metropolis Building stands at the corner where Calle de Alcalá meets Gran Vía and is one of Madrid's most recognisable facades. Its French-inspired Beaux-Arts design is topped by a slate dome decorated with gold leaf and a winged statue of a goddess.

Reviewers rate it as an essential photo stop, and it looks different by day and at night when the street lights come on. It is an exterior sight, free to view at any hour, and takes only a few minutes.
