Explore the Madrid History Museum, set in an old orphanage with a Baroque façade. Follow the city's story through maps, documents, artworks and models, all free to enter.

📖

Full description

Housed in a former orphanage with a notable Baroque façade, the Madrid History Museum covers the city's development through documents, paintings and scale models. Both the permanent and temporary collections are free to enter, which reviewers repeatedly highlight.

Part of the building's front was under restoration at the time of the reviews, though the protective covering was itself described as attractive. Some visitors feel parts of the exhibition could be better organised.

Allow around 90 minutes, and consider booking ahead as recommended. It works well for solo travellers wanting local context before exploring the streets.

Reviews

It’s a free-entry museum. Very nice exhibits on the history of Madrid, though it could be a bit more organized in some parts of the exhibition.
