Church of Saint Anthony of the German

4.6 ·

Look up inside the Church of Saint Anthony of the German, a Baroque jewel in central Madrid. Take in the frescoes that cover the elliptical walls and painted dome from floor to ceiling.

📖

Full description

The Church of Saint Anthony of the German is a compact Baroque church whose elliptical interior is covered from floor to dome with frescoes depicting the life and miracles of Saint Anthony. The murals and painted dome earn it the nickname of Madrid's Sistine Chapel and make it one of the city's less obvious highlights.

A visit is short, around half an hour with the audioguide, though some reviewers find the entry fee steep for the size. It is closed on Mondays and works well as a brief culture stop in the Centro district.

Reviews

A hidden gem a short walking distance from Gran Via! A small ' donation' provides a personal audio recording device for you to learn about the 'frescos' as well as the church dating back to the XVII century. It takes about 20- minutes if you want to hear all the details. Highly recommended!
