The British Museum

4.4 (1,287)Free

Founded in 1753, the British Museum was one of the first national public museums in the world and remains an essential stop for a first visit to London. Its collection ranges from Egyptian mummies and the Rosetta Stone to the contested Parthenon (Elgin) Marbles, all arranged beneath the soaring glass canopy of the Great Court. With a perfect must-see and culture score, it draws crowds accordingly, though free admission keeps it accessible to everyone. Two to three hours is enough to see the highlights, but the collection rewards a much longer, more focused visit.

What people say

"A visit to the British Museum is an unforgettable experience, but it's worth being prepared. Bags are scanned on entry, so it's best to travel light. The museum is incredibly popular and can become extremely busy. During the summer months, the impressive glass roof over the Great Court creates a greenhouse effect, making parts of the museum very warm (be prepared!). We explored mainly the East Asian galleries. The British Museum is vast, it's impossible to see everything in a single visit. It's a fantastic museum to explore, and well worth setting aside at least half a day (or a couple of days) for the visit. Entry is free to the public. And you can download the museum's Audio App before the visit."
