Full description

Built from 1749 onward by writer and politician Horace Walpole, Strawberry Hill House is widely credited as the building that launched the Gothic Revival movement in England, its turrets, fan vaulting and stained glass designed to evoke a medieval castle purely for romantic effect rather than defence. Reviewers with a 4.6 rating describe it as delightfully eccentric, more storybook than stately home, and specifically call out the guided tour for bringing Walpole's playful vision to life in a way a self-guided wander might miss.

Its garden cafe adds a relaxed finish to the visit, making it a rewarding half-day trip for anyone interested in architectural history slightly off the central tourist track.

Good to know

  • Book a guided tour rather than going self-guided, since reviewers say it's what makes the visit special

Reviews

Beautiful place to visit with some nice grounds. A lot of the rooms are low on items, but the ceiling are absolutely stunning. Staff and volunteers are very friendly and knowledgeable, the tea room had high customer service and vegan options available. Recommended for a visit!
