São Bento Palace

4.3 ·

Admire the Palácio de São Bento, the neoclassical home of Portugal's parliament. Take in its stone facade from outside, or arrange a group tour in advance to see inside the former monastery.

📖

Full description

The Palácio de São Bento was built as a monastery in the late 1590s and is now the seat of Portugal's parliament, the Assembly of the Republic. Its neoclassical facades are built from natural stone, while parts of the interior are considerably older, with some sections reported to date to the 17th century.

Casual entry is difficult: interior visits are by guided tour only, for groups of at least 10 and no more than 30 people, arranged by submitting a form on the official website. Most visitors view the exterior in a short stop of about 15 minutes.
