Explore the Carmo Archaeological Museum, set in a Gothic church that lost its roof in the 1755 earthquake. Stand beneath the open arches, then browse the collection inside the ruins.

📖

Full description

The Carmo Archaeological Museum occupies the ruins of a 14th-century Gothic convent church whose roof collapsed in the 1755 earthquake. The standing arches of the nave, open to the sky, are the main attraction and give the site an unusual atmosphere in the middle of the city.

Inside and around the ruins, the archaeological collection and a courtyard with labelled stonework add context. Reviewers agree the setting is the highlight, with some finding the museum collection itself more modest.

Reviews

A lovely museum well worth the low price with an outdoor and indoor area. The film was especially interesting. It's projected on the wall and makes use of the existing architecture. The narration is in both Portuguese and English. The museum shop had some really unique and interesting items. They are especially proud…
