Basilica of Estrela

4.6 ·

Step inside the Basilica of Estrela, a domed church crowned by twin bell towers. Admire the marble interior, find Queen Maria I's tomb, then relax in the garden across the street.

📖

Full description

The Basilica of Estrela stands on a hilltop in the Estrela district, directly across from a pleasant public garden. Its twin bell towers and large dome make it easy to spot, and inside there are sculpted details, coloured marble and the tomb of Queen Maria I.

Reviewers praise the quiet atmosphere, sometimes accompanied by soft choir music, and note that entry to the main church is free, unlike many other Lisbon churches. A paid visit adds access to extra areas of the building.

Half an hour is enough, and it fits neatly after a Tram 28 ride.

Reviews

Unexpectedly arrived here after the tram28 ride and loved the church. Beautiful structure and sculptures inside. Mellow, gentle choir music played in the quiet atmosphere. You can buy a ticket to visit and take photos at the top of the dome, but I didn’t have time so no photos. A short visit here and the park across…
