Baixa de Lisboa

Stroll through Baixa, the orderly downtown grid Lisbon built after the 1755 earthquake. Walk Rua Augusta beneath the triumphal arch, then step out onto Praça do Comércio and its wide open view of the Tagus.

📖

Full description

Baixa is the flat, geometric core of Lisbon, rebuilt on a regular grid after the 1755 earthquake and tsunami levelled the old centre. Its wide pedestrian streets, such as Rua Augusta, lead from the triumphal arch into Praça do Comércio, the large riverside square opening onto the Tagus.

Neoclassical facades, patterned black-and-white pavements, cafés, and shops give it a stately, open character that contrasts with the hilly lanes around it. It works well as a central walking base, linking the main viewpoints, trams, and neighbouring districts at an easy gradient.
