4.7 ·

Stroll Sultanahmet Square, the open heart of Istanbul's old city and former Hippodrome. Walk among its monuments and enjoy the views of the landmarks that frame the space.

📖

Full description

Sultanahmet Square is a wide paved plaza on the site of the ancient Hippodrome, with several monuments standing within it and many of Istanbul's best-known sights around its edges. Reviewers recommend going early, before tour groups arrive, and returning after dark when the square takes on a different atmosphere.

Benches, cafes, restaurants and shops line the surroundings, so it works both as a place to sit and as a starting point for the old city. It is free, open 24 hours, and a typical stop lasts around 20 minutes.
