Head out to the santralistanbul Enerji Müzesi, a former coal power plant turned free museum on a university campus. Explore the machinery and exhibits on energy, engineering and city planning, with hands-on displays aimed at younger visitors.
Full description
Part of the santralistanbul campus at Bilgi University, this museum occupies an old coal-fired power plant and explores energy, industry and the engineering behind urban life. Entry is free, and reviewers say it appeals most to people interested in engineering and city planning history, as well as families thanks to its interactive exhibits, though some of those were out of order on recent visits.
It sits roughly 20 minutes by bus from Karakoy, which makes it a worthwhile detour off the usual tourist circuit. Plan about 45 minutes inside.

Great experience! Old coal power plant made into museum. It’s a part of university campus so ID or passport is strictly required while entering! Free entrance.
