Hagia Irene

4.1 ·

Step into Hagia Irene, one of Istanbul's oldest churches, tucked inside Topkapı Palace's first courtyard. Spend 45 minutes in its austere, peaceful Byzantine interior away from the larger crowds.

📖

Full description

Hagia Irene, meaning Holy Peace, stands inside the first courtyard of Topkapı Palace and is one of three Constantinopolitan churches named for divine attributes, alongside Hagia Sophia. Its interior is plain compared with Istanbul's decorated mosques and churches, which visitors say makes its architecture easier to appreciate and gives it a calm atmosphere.

It is open as a museum with a modest entry fee and suits a visit of about 45 minutes. Reviewers note that renovation work can limit access to the central area, so views may be restricted to the edges.

Reviews

The church is undergoing renovation so is difficult to see the central area with access only to the periphery. It lacks the decoration of the mosques and other churches but that simply highlights more the impressive structure itself. Worth a visit now but should be great one the renovation is complete.
