Look up at Palazzo Rucellai, a Renaissance townhouse whose facade is attributed to Alberti. Spend half an hour tracing its pilasters and stonework on one of Florence's smartest shopping streets.

📖

Full description

Palazzo Rucellai is a fifteenth-century townhouse on Via della Vigna Nuova, commissioned by the wool merchant Giovanni di Paolo Rucellai and attributed by most scholars to Leon Battista Alberti, with construction dated by visitors to 1446–1451. Its facade is the draw: a disciplined grid of pilasters and rusticated stone that reviewers call one of the most significant secular buildings of the Renaissance.

It is still a private home, so the experience is mostly outside, though a budget-friendly entry is listed. Plan about 30 minutes; the facade is easy to miss if you are not looking for its pattern.
