Porta San Gallo

4.3 ·

Seek out Porta San Gallo, a little-visited medieval gate guarding Florence's northern approach. Circle the arch, enjoy the small park beside it, and imagine the travellers who once entered here.

📖

Full description

Porta San Gallo is a gateway from Florence's medieval defences, which visitors date to 1285, and it once admitted travellers arriving from the north. Today it stands as an isolated arch in the centre of a busy roundabout, with a small park and a fountain close by.

Reviewers describe it as a wonderful original entrance to the city, worth the walk to see both arches, though some note litter in the surrounding green space. It is a quick, free stop of around 15 minutes best suited to travellers who enjoy lesser-known fragments of the old walls.

Reviews

Nice park, some shade, still too much trash, the fountain would be great if running, wonderful original entrance to the city, both Arches are worth the walk.
