Museo di San Marco

Enter Museo di San Marco, the former Dominican convent redesigned for the Medici. Walk its quiet cloisters and climb to the upper floor to see Beato Angelico's frescoes, sometimes shown alongside contemporary works.

📖

Full description

Museo di San Marco occupies a former Dominican monastery redesigned in the 1430s by architect Michelozzo for the Medici family. It houses Renaissance frescoes, including the Beato Angelico works that line the upper floor, and a collection of 16th-century paintings.

Reviewers describe the experience as a highlight, and the museum has recently paired Mark Rothko paintings with the historic frescoes. About an hour suits most visitors, and the convent setting makes for a contemplative visit.

Opening hours are shorter on Saturdays, so planning it for the morning is sensible.

Reviews

This was a highlight of our visit. We hadn’t planned to go but when we saw that Mark Rothko paintings were paired with frescos, we couldn’t pass it up. The experience was lovely and the history is this space was really interesting.
