Explore Craigmillar Castle, a genuine medieval fortress on the edge of Edinburgh. Roam its corridors, cellars and prison, then climb to the roof for sweeping views over the city.
Full description
Craigmillar Castle is a real medieval castle rather than a polished museum, and reviewers note it feels much bigger inside than it looks from outside, with many corridors, stairs, chambers and cellars to explore. A tower, a prison and extensive grounds add variety, and the rooftop gives a 360-degree outlook over the city.
It is within walking distance of the centre via Craigmillar Castle Park, and most visitors take around an hour to go round without a tour. There is a small car park, with some street parking nearby in residential roads.

Reviews
Not a fancy modern museum, but a real medieval castle. It is way bigger inside than it looks from the outside, multiple rooms and cellars. Gorgeous view from the roof 360 degrees, you can see Edinburgh Castle and the sea and the hills all around. Just take a bus and enjoy this piece of history.
