Explore Swords Castle, a free medieval archbishop's palace north of Dublin. Walk the ramparts, climb the tower and look into the restored wood-beamed chapel before a picnic on the grounds.
Full description
Swords Castle is a medieval site dating to around 1200, built as an archbishop's residence rather than a true fortress. Visitors can roam freely along the rampart walls, climb the tower, step into the corner castle and see the restored chapel with its wood beams.
Picnic tables on the grounds make it a relaxed family stop, and reviewers call it kid friendly. Admission is free and about 45 minutes is enough.
It lies north of central Dublin, so plan it as a separate outing rather than a city-centre stop.

Beautiful Free Castle to walk around. Lots of picnic tables to eat and enjoy the scenery around you. You can walk along side the castle walls. Inside the church and the corner castle. Kid friendly.
