Széchenyi Chain Bridge

4.7 ·

Cross the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, the span that first joined Buda and Pest. Walk between its stone pylons and iron chains, with the Danube below and the castle ahead.

📖

Full description

The Széchenyi Chain Bridge, designed by William Tierney Clark, opened in 1849 as the first permanent bridge linking Buda and Pest, and it remains one of the city's most recognisable landmarks. Heavy iron chains and stone pylons carry the roadway across the Danube, with stone lions guarding the approaches.

Visitors walk across for views of the Parliament, Buda Castle and the river, and the bridge is illuminated after dark, which makes both sunset and night strolls popular. It is free, open at all hours and works as a natural link between the two halves of the city.

Reviews

The beautiful 19th-century structure blends well with other landmarks on both sides of the river, composing countless nice pictures. The lions on both sides of the bridge are gorgeous. Night views from the river cruise are…
