Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library

Step into the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library, a working library inside an ornate 19th-century palace. Climb to the fourth floor to see the preserved historic rooms, then browse the quiet reading spaces.

📖

Full description

The Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library is Budapest's main public library, with its central building set in a former 19th-century palace. The visitor draw is the fourth floor, where the original ornate rooms are well preserved, with decorative ceilings, wood and carved detail; reviewers mention a small entry fee for that section.

Elsewhere the library works as a quiet study space, praised for natural light and a calm atmosphere, and it is also a cool refuge on hot days. Opening hours vary by day, so check before heading over.

Reviews

Really beautiful place, especially when it's hot outside and you just want to cool off for a moment. If you want to go to the special 4th floor, you have to pay around 5€ for the entrance. Of course really quite but beautiful.
