Dohány Street Synagogue

4.3 ·

Step inside Budapest's Dohány Street Synagogue, the largest in Europe and a landmark of the Jewish quarter. Join a guided tour through the ornate sanctuary, museum and memorial garden to hear its history.

📖

Full description

The Dohány Street Synagogue stands in the old Jewish quarter of Pest and is recognisable by its twin onion-domed towers and striped brickwork. Inside, the layout resembles a cathedral, with galleries, a long nave and decoration that mixes Romantic, Islamic and historic revival styles.

The complex also holds a museum, a cemetery area and a Holocaust memorial, so the visit combines architecture with a sobering account of the district's history. Visitors consistently praise the guided tours for their depth and passion, though some find the interior itself shorter than expected.

Reviews

We visited the synagogue the day after their Hungary's national holiday. We waited for a tour which was very worthwhile. Our tour guide was interesting and passionate about the history, both about the building and the Jewish way of life. We also went into the museum and the second synagogue. Both were impressive!…
