Budapest Inner-City Mother Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

4.6 ·

Step into the Inner-City Parish Church, one of Budapest's oldest. Spend twenty minutes taking in its Gothic-Romanesque interior and learning how Roman, Ottoman and baroque layers meet here.

📖

Full description

The Inner-City Parish Church stands in a square close to the Danube and traces its origins to 1046, with a Gothic-Romanesque structure behind a baroque facade. Reviewers note that it served as a mosque during the Ottoman period and that remains of a Roman camp, discovered on the site, lie beneath it.

It is a compact visit of around twenty minutes and feels especially peaceful on an evening walk by the river. Opening hours are limited on some days, so it is worth checking before you go.
