Hôtel Tassel

4.6 ·

Seek out Hôtel Tassel, the townhouse often credited as the birthplace of Art Nouveau architecture. Study its curved ironwork and sinuous facade from the street, and see where a new style began.

📖

Full description

Hôtel Tassel was designed by architect Victor Horta between 1892 and 1893 for Émile Tassel, a professor at the Université libre de Bruxelles. It is generally considered the first true Art Nouveau house, a turning point that introduced flowing, organic lines to architecture in Belgium and across Europe.

The exterior curves in iron and stone reward a close look, and the stop is quick, around 15 minutes. As a private residence, it is something to appreciate from the pavement as part of a wider Art Nouveau walk.
