Full description

Built in 1969 by the East German government partly as a statement of socialist technological achievement, the 368-meter TV Tower remains the tallest structure in Germany and, thanks to its 203-meter observation deck, the single best place to get your bearings over Berlin's sprawling, low-rise layout. On sunny days the steel sphere below the antenna famously catches the light in a cross pattern, an effect West Berliners nicknamed the 'Pope's Revenge' against the officially atheist East German state.

With a near-maximum 96 must-see score, it's one of the most recognizable symbols of the city and a natural early stop for orientation. Early-evening slots are popular for catching the skyline as the sun sets over the rooftops.

💡

Good to know

  • Book an early-evening slot to see both daylight and lit-up city views in the same visit
  • buy timed tickets in advance, since walk-up queues at Alexanderplatz can be long, especially in summer
  • the deck can be windy even when the ground level is calm, so bring a layer.
