Spandau Citadel

4.5 (13,173)$$ · Mid-range

Spandau Citadel developed in layers over five centuries, its oldest element, the Juliusturm keep, dating to the 14th century, while the surrounding star-shaped bastion fortifications were added during the Renaissance to create one of the best-preserved fortresses of its kind in Germany. Inside, museum exhibits trace both the citadel's military history and Spandau's older town history, and the surrounding moat and grounds make for a pleasant, unhurried walk. Reviewers describe it as a somewhat overlooked site relative to its quality, calm and uncrowded even on weekends, which gives it a different pace from Berlin's more central attractions. With a 4.5 rating and strong culture score, it rewards visitors willing to make the trip out to Spandau, easily reached by U-Bahn.

What people say

"This is a castle that has perhaps been forgotten, but it's well worth a visit! We visited on Sunday afternoon, it wasn't busy and there was a nice, calming, soothing atmosphere. The views from the top of the castle's tower are beautiful! The garden around it is perfect for a pleasant, relaxing stroll. There's a small café by the main entrance with outdoor seating. The service is a bit slow, but the prices for drinks and snacks are lower than usual for such sights."
