Hamburger Bahnhof - Contemporary Art National Gallery

4.3 (7,696)$$ · Mid-range

Hamburger Bahnhof repurposes one of Berlin's oldest train stations — its vast glass-roofed halls barely altered — into one of Europe's leading contemporary art museums, with rotating exhibitions of conceptual, video, and installation work alongside deep holdings of postwar art. The scale of the building is part of the draw: the soaring main hall alone can swallow large-format installations that would overwhelm a conventional gallery. It draws a broad, sometimes skeptical crowd — reviews note the mix of genuine admirers and visitors bemused by more conceptual pieces — but its very high must-see and aesthetic scores confirm its status as a Berlin art-world essential. Plan for a couple of hours, as the collection spans several large wings.

✨ Reasons to go

  • 1The museum occupies one of Berlin's oldest train stations, with its vast glass-roofed halls largely preserved rather than converted into conventional gallery rooms.
  • 2The soaring main hall is large enough to house large-format installations that would overwhelm a typical gallery space.
  • 3The museum's garden hosts open-air events like the Berlin Beats electronic music series.

  • 2no booking is required for general admission
  • 3check the current exhibition schedule in advance, since the program changes and can shape whether a visit skews conceptual or more historical

What people say

"Nice museum with different interesting art exhibitions. Conceptual and modern art, with photo and videography. Only downside was that the main hall was filled with building blocks, which was very loud and echoed through the whole entrance hall."
