Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

4.7 (15,204)Free

Built in stages from 1902 through the mid-20th century, the Temple of the Sacred Heart actually comprises two churches stacked together, a squat Romanesque-Byzantine crypt below and a soaring Gothic-style temple above, topped by a bronze statue of Christ with arms outstretched over the city. Sitting at over 500 meters, it shares its hilltop with Barcelona's historic Tibidabo amusement park, so the trip up, often via the vintage Tramvia Blau and funicular, is as much a part of the appeal as the church itself. Entry is free, and reviewers consistently rank the panoramic views over Barcelona and the Mediterranean among the best in the city, weather permitting. It suits a half-day outing, especially for those traveling with kids who can pair the church with the amusement park rides.

✨ Reasons to go

  • 1The temple stacks two distinct churches, a Romanesque-Byzantine crypt beneath a Gothic-style upper sanctuary, built in phases from 1902 into the mid-20th century.
  • 2A bronze statue of Christ with outstretched arms crowns the temple at over 500 meters above the city.
  • 3The classic approach uses Barcelona's vintage Tramvia Blau tram followed by a funicular up Tibidabo mountain.

💡 Good to know

  • 1Bring a jacket even in summer, as it's noticeably cooler and windier at altitude
  • 2take the funicular or Tramvia Blau up rather than driving, for the classic approach
  • 3go on a clear day, since the view is the main reward and clouds can obscure it.

What people say

"Tibidabo is a really nice place to visit if you have some extra time in Barcelona. If you're traveling with kids, the amusement park is definitely worth a visit and makes for a fun day out. The church is absolutely stunning from the outside, with impressive architecture, although the inside is quite simple and nothing particularly extraordinary. One of the highlights is the incredible view from the balcony, where you can enjoy panoramic views over Barcelona. Overall, it's a great spot that's well worth the trip."
