Travel the coast road to Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon, standing on a cliff above the Aegean. Walk up to the Doric columns and look out across open water.
Full description
The Temple of Poseidon crowns Cape Sounion, at the southern tip of Attica, about a drive south of Athens along the coast. The 5th-century BCE ruins keep a line of Doric columns standing against the sea, and the setting on the headland is the main draw.
Reviewers describe the road along the coast as part of the experience, with beaches on the way, and a short climb leads up to the temple. Allow around an hour on site, and note it can be done independently or as an organised half-day trip.
Open-air and exposed, it suits clear weather.

Reviews
Beautiful place and a more beautiful drive from Athens. If you are going in summer take swim trunks as there are such beautiful beaches on the way to here. It’s a short climb to the temple, the view is magnificent! It was sunny and windy end of June when we visited.
