Philopappos Hill

4.8 ·

Climb Philopappos Hill for one of the clearest views of the Acropolis in all of Athens. Follow the marble-stepped paths past ruins to the summit monument, then settle in as the sun sets over the city.

📖

Full description

Philopappos Hill is a compact green summit southwest of the Acropolis, laced with several trails, some paved with marble steps, that pass assorted ruins and a church along the way. The top carries the ancient Philopappos Monument and delivers one of the best frontal views of the Acropolis, especially at sunset and after dark when the rock is lit.

The climb is short and easy for most walkers, though uneven stone underfoot calls for decent shoes. It is free and open around the clock, and quieter than the more famous viewpoints.

A visit typically takes about ninety minutes.

💡

Good to know

  • Go at sunset for the best light on the Acropolis
  • morning light faces the monument from behind, so photos are weaker
  • wear grippy shoes, as the polished marble steps can be slippery

Reviews

Easy hike, great views. There are several trails, the one I used had marble steps. Many sights on the way. I went early in the morning, not the best light for photos of the Acropolis which lies east of the hill. But it was still worth the effort.
