Find Avli Taverne down a Monastiraki side street, where a line at the door leads to a backyard taverna. Order saganaki, Greek salad and other traditional plates in a relaxed, unpretentious setting.

📖

Full description

Avli Taverne hides in an alley between buildings in the Monastiraki area, where a line of people at the door leads through to a backyard dining space. Reviewers call it authentic and reasonably priced, with fast, smiling service and an easygoing atmosphere, and name the saganaki and Greek salad among the dishes worth ordering.

Waits of around 30 minutes on a Saturday night are described as worthwhile. Hours stretch from 1 PM until 2 AM, so a late dinner is realistic.

It suits groups and couples wanting a casual, traditional taverna meal rather than a refined one.

Reviews

You know when people say “you HAVE to go to this restaurant”? This is one of those places. We lined up for about 30 min (Saturday night, 9pm) and it was well worth the wait. The saganaki, Greek salad and meatballs were all highlights. If we’d had more time in Athens we would have returned for sure!
