Archaeological Site of the Lyceum of Aristotle

4.0 ·

Walk the grounds of Aristotle's Lyceum, where the Peripatetic School once strolled and debated. Follow the garden paths past the excavated foundations of the ancient gymnasium.

📖

Full description

The Lyceum was the gymnasium and grove where Aristotle taught and founded the Peripatetic School, so named for the habit of discussing ideas while walking. The site was rediscovered only in the 1990s and today consists of low foundations of a palaestra and other structures set among planted gardens.

It is modest in scale and calmer than the headline sites, with a small cafe on the grounds. Visitors who value the philosophical associations tend to enjoy it most, while those expecting standing monuments may find it understated.
