Munttoren

4.5 ·

Stop at the Munttoren, the 1620 tower guarding the meeting of the Singel and the Amstel. Look up at its clock faces and carillon, then watch the square's street life below.

📖

Full description

The Munttoren stands at Muntplein, the point where the Singel canal flows into the Amstel river. It began as a gate in the city wall and was rebuilt in 1620 after a fire, gaining the clock faces and carillon of bells that define it today.

It also served for a time as a mint, which gave it its name. Reviewers call it a striking tower with attractive clock faces, and its busy square regularly hosts street performers.

It is free to see from outside, and about fifteen minutes is enough, making it an easy stop when passing through the centre.

Reviews

Really spectacular tower, which at one point in it's history was used as a mint. Beautiful clock faces and carillon of bells were added during renovations after some damage caused by a fire in the 17th century. Highly recommend visiting the flower market nearby.
