De Wallen

Walk through De Wallen, Amsterdam's medieval heart of canals, alleys, and nightlife. See the Oude Kerk and old canal houses by day, or experience the district's energy once the lights come on after dark.

📖

Full description

De Wallen is the oldest part of Amsterdam, centred on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal and Achterburgwal canals, with the Oude Kerk standing at its heart. Its narrow alleys and canal-side lanes are lined with bars, coffee shops, and the red-light windows that give the area its worldwide reputation.

By day it feels more like a historic old town, with 14th-century buildings and canal views; by night it becomes crowded and loud. Visitors should expect heavy foot traffic and follow local rules on photography and behaviour.
