Spend a day at ARTIS, Amsterdam's 19th-century zoo in the middle of the city. Wander shaded paths past chimps, zebras and elephants, then add the aquarium and planetarium.

Full description

ARTIS is a zoo in central Amsterdam founded in the 19th century, combining animal houses and garden paths with an aquarium and a planetarium on the same grounds. Chimpanzees, zebras and elephants are among the residents, and the mature trees and historic buildings give it a calmer, more park-like feel than many modern zoos.

It works best as a full-day family outing, with enough variety under cover to handle changeable weather. Reviewers praise the mix of nature and heritage, though some find it less spectacular than larger zoos elsewhere.

Reviews

Very good Zoo inside of Amsterdam. Feels like a park and everything is accessible. I’m not very happy with the new aquarium since everything is with technology and more likely for children’s. But for the rest, loving the Zoo again !
