Amsterdam Centraal

4.5 ·

Begin your city trip at Amsterdam Centraal, the 19th-century station that doubles as a landmark. Admire the red-brick facade, then explore the waterfront behind it where the ferries depart across the IJ.

📖

Full description

Amsterdam Centraal opened in 1889 and combines Gothic and Renaissance details in a long red-brick facade that faces the old centre. It is the largest station in the city, with shops and restaurants inside and trains, trams, metro and ferries all converging around it.

Behind the building, free ferries cross the IJ to Amsterdam-Noord, and the waterfront gives views toward the A'DAM Lookout and the Eye. Reviewers describe it as busy but striking, a natural first stop on arrival.

Most visitors spend only a short while admiring the architecture before moving on.
