Built in the early 3rd century AD, the Baths of Caracalla could once hold thousands of bathers across pools, gymnasiums and libraries, and its surviving brick vaults still convey the scale of Roman public infrastructure even without the marble facing long since stripped away. The nearby Circus Maximus, once Rome's chariot-racing stadium capable of seating a vast crowd, is now largely an open green space that requires some imagination to picture in its former use. Together they cover two sides of Roman leisure that get far less attention than the Colosseum or Forum.
