Opened nearly two centuries ago, Père-Lachaise is an active cemetery spanning 15 km of paths shaded by lush greenery. Its romantic, sculpted monuments and chapels draw around 3 million visitors a year, alongside notable figures interred within its grounds. The main entrance, built in 1825 by Etienne-Hippolyte Godde, leads into six themed walking routes. Entry is free, though visitors are asked to respect the quiet of the site.

✨ Reasons to go

  • 1Opened in 1804, it is Paris's largest cemetery with 15 km of winding paths.
  • 2The main entrance gate was built in 1825 by architect Etienne-Hippolyte Godde.
  • 3Notable graves include Jim Morrison, Chopin, and Oscar Wilde.

💡 Good to know

Grab a map near the main entrance to find famous graves like Jim Morrison, Chopin, and Oscar Wilde, as the grounds are large and winding paths can be confusing. Wear comfortable shoes since paths are uneven and it's easy to walk for hours.

What people say

"I agree with most of the reviews to date, i.e., this is an experience worth taking. One exception is someone who thought it was not well maintained... I think it's left very natural on purpose, and it feels right for this place. In America, and like in Normandy at the DDay beaches, cemeteries are finely manicured, yes, but that does not mean it's the only way. You could spend many hours here. There are famous people buried here, and beyond that there is other beauty to behold, as well as life and death to contemplate. I walked by 2 active funeral services, and I passed a woman sobbing at a site as she scrolled through her phone no doubt looking at a passed love one. Be respectful and prepare to be moved. RANDOM P.S. There are a few public bathrooms around the perimeter, and the shade was a welcome relief from the unrelenting sun's heat. Wear good shoes... the cobblestones are unforgiving. No tickets are required!"
