Philharmonie Berlin

4.8 (12,431)$$ · Mid-range

The Philharmonie is architect Hans Scharoun's landmark in-the-round concert hall, home to the Berlin Philharmonic and widely regarded as one of the finest acoustic spaces in the world. Beyond its major evening performances, reviewers repeatedly recommend the free lunchtime concerts held informally in the foyer, describing them as excellent and popular enough that arriving well before start time is essential. With a near-perfect 99 must-see score, a 95 culture score, and a 4.8 rating across more than 12,000 reviews, it stands as one of Berlin's genuine cultural essentials rather than just a stop for classical music specialists. It suits both a dedicated concert evening and, for budget-conscious travelers, a free midweek visit.

What people say

"The free lunchtime concerts on Wednesday are excellent and very popular. They take place in the foyer and are informal. Arrive early, we got there 50mins before 13.00 and it was filling up. Places are limited. They give you a plastic chip to get in and when the chips run out that's it. Then you find a place to sit on the floor, stairs or landing if seats are taken. You will hear very well even if you can't see. It was Brahms and Strauss when we were there played by two violins, two violas, and two cellos. The food bar serves a choice of three hot dishes ( the chicken and salad was good for €9.50), plus there are baguettes and snacks and a variety of drinks on sale. The architecture is striking inside and out. A great venue and experience."
