Parco della Caffarella

The Caffarella valley preserves a stretch of genuinely agricultural landscape inside Rome's city limits, part of the wider Appia Antica park, with Roman-era ruins scattered among fields still sometimes grazed by sheep. Wide dirt paths make it a favourite for running and cycling as well as walking, and its mixed use by locals gives it a lived-in, unpolished character distinct from Rome's manicured villas. It's a good complement to a visit further along the Appian Way rather than a standalone destination.
