Sir John Soane's Museum

4.7 (5,552)Free

Sir John Soane's Museum preserves the London townhouse of the eponymous 19th-century architect almost precisely as he arranged it, with sarcophagi, classical fragments, and Hogarth paintings packed into ingeniously lit rooms and mirrored alcoves. Its high hidden-gem score alongside a perfect culture score captures its appeal precisely: a collection as rich as any national museum's, but experienced in an intimate, idiosyncratic domestic setting rather than a grand institutional one. Free admission and a strong rating from a smaller but devoted base of reviewers point to a museum beloved by those who find it rather than a mass tourist draw. Queues can form since the house limits visitor numbers at a time.

What people say

"This museum is just different. Never seen anything like this! It's as if a million of different items were donated to a museum, the best ones went to the main building, but too many others remained, and they were put up everywhere in this building instead. Every square meter contains an item or several! The architecture is also incredible from the inside! Highly recommended!"
