Charlottenburg

Charlottenburg was the commercial and cultural heart of West Berlin during the Cold War division, when Mitte sat behind the Wall, and it still carries that old-money, bourgeois character. Kurfürstendamm, known to Berliners as Ku'damm, is its grand shopping boulevard, lined with international flagship stores and the bombed-out shell of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, deliberately left in ruins as a war memorial. The district's namesake, Charlottenburg Palace, is Berlin's largest surviving Hohenzollern residence, with formal baroque gardens that offer a rare palace-and-park experience within city limits. Compared to Mitte's monumental history or Kreuzberg's edge, Charlottenburg feels calmer, wealthier, and more traditionally European.
