El Xampanyet

4.6 (6,478)$$ · Mid-range

El Xampanyet has poured cava and served anchovies from behind the same small bar for generations, and its standing-room-only layout is part of the draw rather than a limitation — reviewers specifically recommend standing at the bar for the most authentic version of the experience. At 4.6 stars from 6,478 reviews and a must-see score of 90, it has genuine old-Barcelona institution status, with a solid culture score reflecting its long history rather than manufactured charm. There can be a queue depending on when you arrive, since no reservations are taken. It's a quick, characterful stop rather than a full sit-down meal.

✨ Reasons to go

  • 1Generations-old bar near Picasso Museum known for pouring its own house cava alongside anchovies
  • 2No reservations are taken, so a queue often forms before opening
  • 3Traditionally an all-standing bar rather than table service, considered the authentic way to experience it

💡 Good to know

  • 1No reservations are taken, so arrive early to avoid a queue
  • 2stand at the bar for the classic experience rather than seeking a table
  • 3order cava with the anchovies, the house pairing

What people say

"This is probably one of the best if not the best stop at restaurant in all of BARCELONA. There can be a align depending on the time that they open up so I would say they’re pretty early. It’s a no-frills local and Taurus joint. Definitely start off with the house cava. I think it’s priced at about 2.5€ per glass. The pork with the Shishito peppers were freaking amazing. They also had this pork on polenta, which tasted like a bit of delicious mashed potatoes. The codfish omelette was phenomenal. I love that they use a super fine, black pepper and finish everything off with Malden sea salt. The calamari dish was just OK. And the dessert was just OK. I will probably skip those next time. But this place was so good that we had to come back twice. A little bit more expensive than other type of places that we went to, but 100% worth the price."
