"The "grand projet" of President Jacques Chirac, the Branly is an eclectic building by famous architect Jean Nouvel (born 1945). The long entrance way to the permanent collection feels like the architect unspooled the famous Guggenheim spiral in New York. A great feature of the building is the space under it held up by pilotis. Surrounded by the entrance park on one side the space gets plenty of cross-ventilation and felt cool even on a very hot day. Great exhibition on African fashion that I had previously seen at the Brooklyn Museum. The permanent collection includes a number of Benin bronzes and also several Mardi grad Indian costumes from New Orleans. The permanent collection is presented in a very dark space which makes the art look dramatic and differs significantly from the Museum of Five Continents at the Louvre and the new Michael Rockefeller wing at the Metropolitan Museum in New York which are both much lighter. Very nice museum store. There is also a great restaurant on top of the building which can be reached via a separate entrance from the street (Les Ombres). That restaurant features a fabulous view of the Eiffel Tower. We were lucky to attend some of the festivities for the 20th anniversary of the Branly."
