Horniman Museum and Gardens

4.6 (9,661)Free

The Horniman Museum pairs an unusually wide-ranging collection, spanning taxidermy, musical instruments from around the world, and a well-regarded aquarium, with sweeping gardens that offer some of the best views over London. Its solid local score reflects its role as a beloved neighborhood institution as much as a tourist attraction, with reviewers regularly praising it as an ideal family day out. A strong rating and free admission add to its appeal, though its location further from central London keeps visitor numbers lower than the major South Kensington museums. Budget at least ninety minutes to see both the museum galleries and the gardens properly.

✨ Reasons to go

  • 1The collection spans taxidermy, global musical instruments, and an aquarium under one roof
  • 2The gardens include specialty beds like a dye garden showing plants grown for practical uses
  • 3The grounds offer skyline views over London and free admission to both museum and gardens

💡 Good to know

  • 1The museum itself is free, though the aquarium and some seasonal features carry a small charge
  • 2combine the visit with a walk through the gardens, which have excellent skyline views
  • 3it's a bit outside central London, so plan transport time accordingly.

What people say

"The Horniman Museum is such a beautiful and well-maintained place, perfect for a day out with family or friends. One of the best things is that entry to the museum and gardens is completely free, although you'll need separate tickets if you want to visit the aquarium or the butterfly house. There's so much to explore, from fascinating museum exhibits to animal trails, lovely gardens, children's playgrounds, and a café where you can relax after walking around. The entire place is clean, well-organised, and has a peaceful atmosphere. We visited during the museum's 125th birthday celebrations, and the experience was even more special. There were plenty of stalls, activities, and a dedicated play area for children, creating a lively and festive atmosphere that everyone could enjoy. Whether you're interested in history, nature, or simply looking for a fun family day out, the Horniman Museum has something for everyone. It's an excellent place to spend a few hours, and I would definitely recommend visiting if you're in London."
