Piazza Venezia

This is where several of Rome's main roads converge, historically the political heart of the city and the spot from which Mussolini delivered speeches from Palazzo Venezia's balcony. Today it functions more as a busy roundabout and orientation point than a destination in itself, ringed by the Altar of the Fatherland, Trajan's Column, and the start of Via dei Fori Imperiali toward the Colosseum. Most visitors pass through rather than linger, using it as a launchpad for the surrounding sights. It's worth a brief pause to take in the scale before moving on.
